泰山医学院源于1891年创办的华美医院医校，1903年在华美医院医校基础上组建共合医道学堂，即后来的齐鲁大学医学院，1952年齐鲁大学医学院与创办于1932的山东医学院合并组建新的山东医学院（校址在济南）。1970年山东医学院与山东中医学院合并为山东医学院，搬迁至泰安市新泰县楼德镇（济南设留守处），1974年建立山东医学院楼德分院，1979年山东医学院楼德分院迁至泰安市区，改名为山东医学院泰安分院，1981年经国务院批准，山东医学院泰安分院更名为泰山医学院。

2006年11月，学校顺利通过教育部首轮本科教学工作水平评估，并取得优秀成绩。学校现在是教育部、卫生部（现卫计委）首批卓越医生教育培养计划项目试点高校，山东应用型特色名校立项建设单位，国家教育部、卫计委首批临床医学硕士专业学位研究生培养模式改革试点高校；临床医学本科专业为教育部首批本科专业综合改革试点项目。

Taishan Medical University (TSMU) was founded in 1891 as the Medical School of Huamei Hospital. The university was co-founded with Gonghe Medical School in 1903 which was called Medical College of Qilu University later. In 1952, the Medical College of Qilu University merged with Shandong Medical College which was founded in 1932 and formed the new Shandong Medical College (the campus located in Jinan city). In 1970, Shandong Medical College merged with Shandong College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and moved to the Loude district of Xintai county of Tai’an city (the rear office in Jinan city). The Loude Branch College of Shandong Medical College was founded in 1974 and then was moved to Tai’an city in 1979. Its name was changed into the Tai’an Branch College of Shandong Medical College. With the approval of the State Council in 1981, its name was then changed to Taishan Medical University.

In November 2006, Taishan Medical University passed the first round of Undergraduate-Teaching-eva luation organized by the Ministry of Education with excellent grade. Our university is the experimental unit of Outstanding-Doctor-Training Program approved by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health (now the National Health and Family Planning Commission), and the applied characteristic construction unit of Shandong Province. It is also the pilot university of the reform on Clinical-Master-Training-Mode approved by the Ministry of Education and the National Health and Family Planning Commission. Besides, the undergraduate discipline of Clinical Medicine is the first professional comprehensive reform pilot project approved by the Ministry of Education.

Taishan Medical University covers an area of more than 200 hectares with a gross floor area of 820,000 square meters. The university now has fixed assets valued at RMB 1.45 billion Yuan, with the teaching, science and research equipment of RMB 250 million Yuan, and students have access to 2.88 million books in school library. The university has over 3,500 faculty and staff members, among which 746 have gotten associate professor and above, 212 have received doctor’s degree, 1256 have received master’s degree and above. Taishan Medical University has 17 colleges with 42 undergraduate disciplines such as Clinical Medicine, Medical Imaging, Nursing, Pharmacy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Pharmacy Engineering, Medical Inspection Technique, Preventive Medicine, Health Inspection and Quarantine and so on. There are 4 state-level characteristic disciplines, 8 provincial characteristic disciplines, 2 high-level application-oriented programs of provincial key construction, 2 high-level application-oriented cultivation programs of Shandong Province, 3 pilot programs of outstanding engineering education in Shandong Province. There are 43 provincial fine courses, 2 provincial bilingual teaching demonstration courses, 2 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 innovation experimental area for the training of provincial talents. There are four master’s degree authorization centers of first-grade disciplines, 36 academic master’s degree authorization centers, 22 professional master’s degree authorization centers. The total number of undergraduates and junior college students now exceeds 22,000 plus over 800 postgraduates. There are also more than 1,000 international students from over 10 countries and regions such as Asia, Africa, America and so on.

Pharmacology, Medical Imaging & Nuclear Medicine and Pathogenic Biology are provincial key disciplines, among which Pharmacology is provincial characteristic key discipline; Medical Imaging, Geriatrics, Epilepsy Diagnosis, and Biochemistry are provincial key disciplines of medicine and health. The Laboratory of Cerebral Microcirculation and Laboratory of Atherosclerosis are key laboratories in Shandong Universities; Cellular Immunology Laboratory and Epidemiology Laboratory are key laboratories of medicine and health in Shandong Province; Biotechnology of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Laboratory is the key scientific laboratory of Shandong TCM Administration. Since the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan", we have undertaken 1,245 science and research projects, of which 100 are national level projects, and 262 are provincial level projects. The university has received 264 scientific research awards, of which 10 are provincial awards. 1,908 scientific and research articles have been published, of which 390 have been retrieved in SCI and EI. The directly affiliated hospital of our university, which covers an area of 115,000 square meters, has fixed assets valued at RMB 860 million Yuan. The medical equipment has a total value of RMB 270 million Yuan, and patients have access to 1,600 berths. The hospital is equipped with 53 clinical departments and 8 medico-technical departments, among which the department of Gynecology is the training foundation of endoscopy and minimally invasive technique by the Ministry of Health; the departments of Emergency Medicine, Medical Imaging, and General Surgery are key clinical medicine subjects of Shandong Province; the department of TCM is the key TCM subject of Shandong Province; the research laboratory of Clinical Intoxication is the key medical and health laboratory of Shandong Province; the departments of Oncology, Neurology, and Breast Surgery are key clinical construction sites of Shandong Province. Moreover, our university has 18 non-directly affiliated hospitals and more than 280 practical teaching bases.

Taishan Medical University offers Adult Higher Education (correspondence courses and evening college), including many undergraduate disciplines such as Clinical Medicine, Medical Imaging, Medical Inspection, Oral Medicine and so on. Those who participate in and pass the foreign language exam of Shandong Province Adult Higher Education Degree Program and the main courses exam will be awarded degree certificates. In-service training includes health professional skills training projects approved by the Ministry of Health, and the continuing education training towards health care, family planning and rural medical personnel.

The university has established relatively stable academic exchange and cooperation with over 20 countries and regions. We actively carry out cooperation with foreign countries and enterprises, and train students majoring in Clinical Medicine, Medical Imaging, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Marketing with worldwide well-known colleges and universities in Britain, South Korea and other countries. In 2010, Taishan Medical University was listed by the Ministry of Education as one of the Medical Undergraduate Education (offered in English) Institutions for overseas students.
